Instilled with the belief that everyone should give back, I have spent a majority of my career in advocacy. I have worked with disenfranchised youth and at-risk teens as well as homeless and inner-city adults. I have worked to facilitate citizen involvement in government decision-making and recommended initiatives to city and government institutions affecting neighborhood living conditions. Although still very civic minded, when I was hired as the community relations director for a humane society in Dayton, Ohio, I shifted gears and my passion became advocating for animal welfare.
In 2005, I volunteered for two weeks for The Humane Society of The United States and worked on the rescue efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. With military training as a survival and decontamination instructor, as well as training in pet first aid and large animal handling experience, my skills were utilized in the disaster region. Shortly after Katrina, I was hired as the Ohio State Director for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). In that role, I continued my hands on approach to assist with animal abuse and neglect cases, as well as assisting with rescue during other natural disasters- the Cedar Rapids, Iowa floods, Hurricane Ike and man- made disasters- animal hoarding, and large scale animal abuse cases. I have also worked with law enforcement on several dog and cock fighting raids and have spent several years advocating to strengthen animal welfare laws at the Ohio statehouse both with HSUS and as an independent consultant. I am proud to say that five of the 9 bills I worked on have been passed into law in Ohio
I have over 20 years experience researching, developing and facilitating trainings and workshops.
In the summer of 2010 I worked with Sumter DART (Disaster Animal Rescue Team) on oiled bird rescue, transport and release after the BP oil spill. I recently worked with the Discovery channel on a short lived series called “Wild Animal Repo” with my friend Scott Lope.
I represented the interest of Radio Systems Corporation, a multi-national manufacturing company specializing in pet training products. I traveled globally - Canada, Belgium, United Kingdom, Austria, Australia and South Africa- to meet with interested parties and represent the interests of the company on a legislative, alliance building and spokesman level. In this capacity, I was also fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve on several national and international associations and boards.
